Mid-Workout Thoughts

Whenever I’m watching a professional football game, I find it so funny that the coaches are pulled to the side at halftime and interviewed for TV. Imagine if that happened during a cross country or track race. The athlete is 7 laps into a 5k, and the announcers pull the coach into the booth like “so, Anthony is already falling off the lead pack. Do you think there’s any chance of salvaging this race?” And the coach just has to try to stay composed and positive even though he’s probably panicked and praying for anything other than a blow-up. It would add another element of drama and intrigue to watching track, so I’m kind of a fan of the mid-race interview.

I can’t interview myself during a race (I mean, if I’m not breathing too hard to talk it’s not a race..), but I can take the same concept and apply it to a workout. There are between-rep rest periods that provide an ideal time to share some unfiltered thoughts, and those thoughts generally end up being very unfiltered due to fatigue. On my last tempo run, I wore a microphone and talked throughout the run and the short intervals I had after it. Watch the video below to see my raw thoughts during a workout.
