The London Marathon will be run without one of the biggest names in the event.

Marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei will miss the 2022 TCS London Marathon on Sunday due to a minor hamstring injury that she’s been dealing with.

“I have been struggling over the past month with an issue in the hamstring of my right leg,” she said in her announcement. “My training has been up and down and not the way I would like to prepare to be in top condition for the 2022 TCS London Marathon. We’ve decided it’s best I withdraw from this year’s race and get further treatment on my injuries in order to enter 2023 stronger than ever.”

Kosgei ran 2:14.04 in 2019 at the Chicago Marathon to not only win the event, but break the women’s marathon world record. She’s won five Major Marathons, including the London Marathon in 2019 and again in 2020.

She also took home the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
