Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club announced today on Instagram that he will miss the upcoming Olympic Trials.
Klecker, who was on Team USA at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, said, “After tearing my adductor earlier this year we did everything we could to get the ranking necessary, and get healthy for the trials. Unfortunately, I’ve run out of time to be ready to race for my second Olympic team. With the quality of runners in the US, my fitness is not where it needs to be.”
Boasting personal best times of bests of 3:37.00 (1500m), 7:34.14 (3000m), 12:54.99 (5000m), and 27:07.57 (10000m), Klecker is arguably one the USA’s top all-around distance runners. He would have been a strong contender to make the team for the Paris Olympics in both the 5000 and 10000 meters, however, as he noted in his post, “Going for my second Olympic team will have to wait another 4 years.”
Following the injury, Klecker ran The TEN in March, finishing in an impressive 27:09, at the time stating, “The last few weeks I had to cut training to rest a stress reaction in my pelvis. Thankfully we avoided any serious injury as my body felt great during the race.”
Alicia Monson, Klecker’s teammate at the OAC, announced last month that she would be missing rest of the season due to a meniscus tear.
