In a post to Strava this afternoon, Oregon Freshman Simeon Birnbaum announced that he will miss remainder of the 2024 outdoor season due to a stress fracture.
He wrote, “I am honestly extremely confused on how this could have happened. I am grateful we caught it before it got worse but I will not be able to race this outdoor season.”
Two weeks ago at the Oregon Preview, Birnbaum made his college debut running the 1500m in 3:45.27 for second place. After the race he told Runnerspace, “Felt good to finally get out there. I have been looking forward to racing for the Ducks,” before stating that he was not happy with the race itself.
Birnbaum came into Oregon with much fanfare as one of the top prep recruits in the nation. He ran a number 2 all-time 1500 meter (3:37.93) at the 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals and was the 17th high schooler in history to run a sub-4 mile, first doing so at the 2022 Brooks PR Invitational in 3:59.51.
We wish Simeon a speedy and full recovery.
