Track Talk: Was Glen Mills right on the sport missing the boat on Bolt? McLaughlin’s performance in Nashville

Track and field never disappoints.

It’s arguably the best action-adventure reality television show that more people should watch, if only it were properly made available to them and if the athletes were properly promoted.

These thoughts were captured well by legendary Jamaican coach Glen Mills, who coached Usain Bolt.

“One of the things I will lament is that both locally and internationally, with a star performer of Bolt’s level, the sport did not capitalise on it in the way it should,” said Mills in an interview with the Jamaica Observer

But while the sport has a ways to go in that regard, there’s still excitement in the air as the season progresses, and as championship season is a little over 30 days away.

There were incredible performances across the sport, especially in Nashville at the Music City Track Carnival.

20-year-old Tamari Davis won the women’s 100m with a great time of 10.91, while Brittany Brown won the women’s 200m with a time of 21.99. Brooke Anderson won the hammer throw with a mark of (77.19), while Ackeem Blake of Jamaica won the men’s 100m with a time of 9.92.

But the star of the show was Sydney McLaughlin, who in her first 400h race of the season ran the third fastest time in the history of the event with her time of 51.61.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
