Frequently Asked Question: Technical Models for Any Athlete

Share this article:

Each week, I like to highlight a question that is frequently asked of me by both coaches and athletes. This week, I address technique.

A lot of times, athletes and coaches will ask if they (or their athlete) should emulate a particular successful professional athlete. My advice here is to adopt a technical model of a successful athlete that is similar to your own (or the athlete you are training).

Additionally, if you are going to select an area to focus on, for example in the jumps, a significant commonality I see among successful athletes is that their takeoffs set them apart. They have great sprint mechanics, their thighs are basically parallel to the ground, they are tall in the hips, and at takeoff, their free-leg thigh was always parallel to the ground. The thing is, we adopt these techniques at takeoff because they are common among successful athletes, but how they got there may have been different given their various strengths and physical traits.

Watch my full explanation below, and make sure to check out the full suite of coaching I offer at Maximum Velocity Athletics Training. Also, follow me on Instagram at @jeremyfhj to catch various gym and track sessions throughout the week.
