Pre Classic: Preview and How to Watch

Share this article:

The Prefontaine Classic, the premiere USA-based meet on the Diamond League Schedule, is coming back to Eugene on May 25.

HOW TO WATCH: Beginning at 1:40pm ET on USATF.tv (pre-NBC coverage) | Live coverage on NBC begins at 4pm ET

The action kicks off at Hayward Field with a men’s and women’s para wheelchair 400 meters and has consistent action on the track and in the field until the Men’s Bowerman Mile, scheduled for 5:52pm ET. In total, we will get 26 events, comprising of 14 Diamond League contests, the Kenyan Olympic Trials 10k, in addition to numerous para and youth contests.

FEATURED EVENTS

Gudaf Tsegay, who ran a world record 5k (14:00.21) at last year’s Pre Classic, will attempt to find Hayward Magic once again at this year’s event, but this time in the 10k.

In women’s Discus Throw, we expect to see Valarie Allman, Laulauga Tausaga, Yaime Perez and Sandra Elkasević. Allman is thus far undefeated on the season, besting Perez in previous each of the previous Diamond League competitions they have been entered. The women’s pole vault is scheduled to kick off shortly thereafter, and will see a head-to-head matchup between USA’s Katie Moon and Sandi Morris. Morris is fresh off a victory from the LA Grand Prix, where she jumped 4.70 meters, her top outdoor performance to this point of the season.

The women’s 800m race will feature last year’s World Championships podium finishers, Mary Moraa, Keely Hodgkinson, and Athing Mu. Great Britain’s Jemma Reekie is also scheduled to be on the starting line.

Update: It is reported by Runner’s World that Athing Mu will not race the Pre Classic due to a sore hamstring.

The men’s shot put will also see a clash of titans with Ryan Crouser, Tom Walsh, and Joe Kovacs on the schedule. Crouser tends to be the favorite in each competition he has entered the past few years, but Kovacs put on an absolute display at the LA Grand Prix over the past weekend, throwing a monstrous 22.93 meters. Payton Otterdahl is also on the start list, and he has had a solid opening to his season as well.

Update: Ryan Crouser is no longer listed as part of the starting fields for the shot put at the Pre Classic

The Bowerman Mile will close the show, with pretty much every miler you want to see. Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Josh Kerr, Yared Nuguse, Olli Hoare, Matt Centrowitz, Jake Wightman, Cole Hocker … the list just keeps going. Think we will get another record setting performance like at last year’s meet?

Update: Per the Pre Classic site startlists, Matt Centrowitz has been removed from the field and Cooper Teare has been added
