This week on RealTalk, I had the pleasure of meeting with World Indoor Silver Medalist Trevor Bassitt. A recent graduate of Ashland University, Trevor set the record books ablaze while suiting up in the purple and gold for the Eagles. Not only did he set the NCAA D2 record in the 200 and 400 meters, he also brought home six NCAA Championships and numerous All-American honors. Trevor is recently back stateside following a whirlwind IAAF World Indoor Championships in Belgade, Serbia.
Running the 400 meter hurdles (400mh) during outdoor season, Trevor focuses on the 400 meters without the hurdles indoors. Coming off a 2021 where he finished 8th at the 400mH Olympic Trials, Bassitt vowed to do whatever it takes to stand on the podium in 2022. He did exactly that. At the USA Indoor Championships, Trevor surprised everyone except himself by finishing first in a strong field, earning his first USA Championship.
In this episode, Trevor takes us through his career from the very beginning. Growing up in Bluffton, Ohio, it wasn’t easy for him to trust his love for track and field. Splitting his time between the track and the basketball court, he nearly hung up his spikes if it weren’t for the encouragement of his parents. He also talks about his decision to go to (and stay at) Ashland University, the mentorship he has received from Jud Logan and Ernie Clark, and valuable lessons he has learned along the way.
